Do I really need Triple Glazing?

Triple glazing is often marketed as the ultimate solution for energy efficiency in skylights and windows, offering impressive thermal performance metrics. On paper, Triple Glazed skylights can achieve remarkable U-values as low as 0.6 W/m²K, suggesting exceptional insulation capabilities that surpass standard double glazing options.

However, the practical benefits of triple glazing for residential applications remain a subject of ongoing debate among building professionals. While triple glazing does provide additional thermal insulation, the real-world impact on home comfort and energy consumption may be less significant than the specifications suggest, particularly in moderate climate regions like the UK.

The cost-benefit analysis is an important consideration for homeowners. Triple-glazed skylights typically come with a higher initial purchase price and installation cost compared to quality double-glazed alternatives. In many cases, the incremental energy savings realised through triple glazing may take many years to offset this premium, if at all.

For most residential applications, high-quality double-glazed skylights with Low-E coatings and Argon filling (like those offered in Skyseal's standard range) provide an optimal balance of performance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefit. For friendly expert advice, call our expert team on 024 7666 7234 to help you decide the most suitable glazing option based on your specific home design, orientation, and climate conditions, rather than automatically defaulting to triple glazing based solely on technical specifications.

What is Light Transmission?

Light Transmission refers to the percentage of visible light that passes through a skylight's glazing system. This important performance metric directly impacts the amount of natural daylight entering your living space through skylights.

When selecting the ideal skylight for your home, understanding light transmission values helps you balance your desire for natural illumination against potential concerns about glare or excessive brightness. Higher light transmission percentages mean more natural daylight will filter into your interior spaces, potentially reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours and creating a more open, airy atmosphere.

Our skylights with various light transmission options to suit different applications and preferences. For living areas where abundant natural light is desired, skylights with higher transmission values (typically 70-80%) provide maximum daylight penetration. For spaces like bedrooms or media rooms where light control is more important, models with moderate transmission values (around 50-60%) offer a balanced solution.

It's worth noting that light transmission works in conjunction with other skylight features like Low-E coatings, which can selectively allow visible light through while still blocking heat transfer. Our skylights have been engineered to optimise both natural lighting and energy efficiency for superior performance in modern homes.

What is Solar Heat Reflection?

Solar Heat Reflection is a critical performance metric for modern skylights that quantifies their ability to manage solar energy transfer into your living space. This property is particularly important for roof-mounted glazing like Skyseal skylights, which receive direct sun exposure throughout the day.

When sunlight strikes a skylight, a portion of the solar energy is transmitted through the glass into the interior space, while another portion is reflected back to the atmosphere. Solar Heat Reflection specifically measures the percentage of total solar energy that the skylight system effectively redirects away from your home. The higher this percentage value, the more effective the skylight is at preventing unwanted heat gain during warmer periods.

For example, a Skyseal skylight with a Solar Heat Reflection rating of 70% means that 70% of the sun's thermal energy is reflected away from your interior, while only 30% passes through the glazing system. This significant reduction in solar heat gain helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures without excessive reliance on air conditioning systems, particularly important during summer months or in rooms with substantial skylight coverage.

Skyseal achieves enhanced Solar Heat Reflection through specialised glazing technologies including advanced Low-E coatings, tinted glass options, and multi-pane configurations with insulating gas fills. By carefully engineering these elements, Skyseal skylights deliver an optimal balance between beneficial natural light transmission and controlled solar heat gain, contributing to improved energy efficiency, reduced cooling costs, and superior year-round comfort in your home.
