What is a Self-Cleaning roof light?
Self-cleaning glass is an innovative glazing technology incorporated into our premium skylights to minimise maintenance requirements and ensure consistently clear views. This advanced glass features a specialised dual-action coating applied during the manufacturing process.
The self-cleaning functionality works through two distinct mechanisms. First, the coating creates a photocatalytic effect when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. This photocatalytic action breaks down organic dirt particles and pollutants that accumulate on the glass surface, converting them into volatile compounds that can be easily removed.
Second, the coating creates a hydrophilic (water-loving) surface that causes rainwater to spread evenly across the glass rather than forming droplets. This sheeting action allows water to flow smoothly across the entire surface, effectively carrying away the loosened dirt particles and residue without leaving streaks or water spots that are common with standard glass.
For skylight owners, this self-cleaning technology offers significant practical advantages, particularly for roof-mounted installations that are difficult to access for regular cleaning. The system works continuously with each rainfall, maintaining clearer views, maximising natural light transmission, and reducing the need for manual cleaning, especially valuable for skylights installed in hard-to-reach locations. While occasional cleaning may still be beneficial in extremely dry periods or areas with heavy pollution, the self-cleaning properties substantially reduce maintenance requirements compared to conventional glass.
