What is a Thermal Break?

A thermal break is an engineered component within the aluminium frame system of high-performance skylights such as those manufactured by Rubber4Roofs. It consists of a continuous layer of low thermal conductivity material strategically positioned to separate the interior and exterior metal profiles of the frame.

This design feature serves a critical function in preventing thermal bridging – the unwanted transfer of heat or cold through highly conductive aluminium material. Without an effective thermal break, the aluminium frame would readily conduct external temperatures to the interior surface, creating cold spots during winter months that fall below the dew point of interior air, resulting in problematic condensation.

Here at Rubber4Roofswe incorporate advanced polyamide thermal break technology in our skylight frames, creating a significant barrier against heat transfer. This sophisticated design element not only eliminates internal condensation issues but also dramatically improves the overall thermal efficiency of the entire skylight assembly. By reducing heat loss through the frame, thermal breaks complement the insulating properties of the glazing system for comprehensive energy performance.

Beyond preventing condensation and improving thermal efficiency, the inclusion of quality thermal breaks in skylights contributes to increased interior comfort by maintaining more consistent surface temperatures around the skylight perimeter, eliminating cold zones, and enhancing the overall energy performance of your home.
